managing performance difficult conversations - Lighter HR

Managing Performance:
Are Difficult Conversations Really That Difficult?

When I ask people managers what part of their role they enjoy the least, it is really common to hear them refer to performance management and more specifically dealing with any under-performance that needs to be addressed.
There is just something about needing to ‘point something out’ or ‘tell someone that they are not doing great’ that makes us uncomfortable. We all naturally want to be liked and have a well-functioning team where everyone is happy and so just the prospect of something getting in the way of this makes us want to avoid it at all cost.

Difficult Employees Poor Performance - Lighter HR

Difficult Employees:
There’s Always One (At Least)!

Wouldn’t you just love to have a team of well-behaved fantastic performers who make your life a joy each day you are at work? This could be called a ‘manager’s dream’ but the reality is often quite the opposite. You are busy with work, have targets to hit and objectives to achieve and then there is your team. Some are doing their job and doing it well, others might even be exceeding your expectations and then there are those that just always create issues or do not perform to the level that you’d like them to.

What are Settlement Agreements
and When Should You Use Them?

There are times when an employee/employer relationship just can’t move forward. It’s not a position than anyone wants to find themselves in but it does happen and the business needs to understand what the options are in this scenario. A settlement agreement is something that can be considered and in this blog post we’ll look at some of the scenarios when such an agreement may be worth considering.

Employee Reward:
Time to Look Beyond the Traditional?

It is typically quite straight forward when we think about a rewards package for our employees – it’s a salary and maybe some commission or bonus scheme. This is understandable. It’s the way that things have always been.
But isn’t it about time we rethink our reward practices? Employee motivation for coming to work has changed significantly and the working practices themselves keep transforming so why not also rethink how we reward our people?

Employee Engagement Surveys - What Are Your Employees Thinking and Do You Really Care

Employee Engagement Surveys:
What Are Your Employees Thinking and Do You Really Care?

As an employer, you will no doubt want your employees to enjoy working in your organisation and not just turn up every day because they are paid to, but how do you know what they genuinely think about working for you if you don’t ask them?

There are lots of different ways to measure engagement so here’s a quick overview of the pros and cons of two types of employee engagement survey.

Hours or Output
What’s More Important?

How do you get the best results from your staff? What is the key to improved performance and productivity? These are the constant questions that business owners ask themselves and whilst it might seem surprising, numerous studies have shown that there are a few key strategies that help businesses achieve improved performance. One of these strategies is to focus on employee outputs – the actual results of the work that the employees do.
